Preparing your pet

You probably have an emergency plan for your family but did you include your pets? Make sure you create a kit and plan for the animals in your life too. Planning ahead is essential for making sure your pets are safe and well following a disaster. 


What You Can Do

Things you can do to prepare your pet include:

  • Assembling a kit for your pets
  • Knowing where you can evacuate with your pets (pet friendly hotels) along your evacuation route
  • Having a pet buddy
  • Keeping a collar and tag on your pets
  • Microchipping your pet and keep it updated
  • Including photos of your pets in your kit(s)

Items to Include in Your Pet's Kit

When making your emergency plan be sure to consider your pets. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) encourages you to include the following to your family kit.

  • Plenty of Food and Water
  • Necessary Medication
  • Pet First Aid Kit
  • Shelter Information & Travel Equipment
  • Leash, Harness, Collar(s), Identification tags
  • Important documents/License
  • Sanitary solutions
  • Toys, Blankets, Bed, Other Comfort items
