Terrible 10 - Spartina

Spartina

Common Cordgrass (Spartina anglica)

  • Found on mudflats, estuaries, low tidal zones.
  • Out-competes native vegetation and converts mudflats into single species meadows. Destroys important habitat for migratory shorebirds and waterfowl, increases the threat of flooding and severely affects the state’s shellfish industry.
  • Introduced to serve as bank stabilization and provide forage for cattle in Port Susan Bay in early 1960s. Believed to be a sterile hybrid, but it was able to reproduce and spread rapidly.
