Terrible 10 - Spartina
Terrible 10 - Spartina
Common Cordgrass (Spartina anglica)
Found on mudflats, estuaries, low tidal zones.
Out-competes native vegetation and converts mudflats into single species meadows. Destroys important habitat for migratory shorebirds and waterfowl, increases the threat of flooding and severely affects the state’s shellfish industry.
Introduced to serve as bank stabilization and provide forage for cattle in Port Susan Bay in early 1960s. Believed to be a sterile hybrid, but it was able to reproduce and spread rapidly.
