Island County Building Inspection Process Update

Please reference the memorandums from Island County Planning and Community Development and Governor Inslee link below.

This notice is to address the inspection concerns from our contractors, building and construction community, as well as the general public. The following points are the parameters to comply with the above memorandums:

  • Construction related to emergency repairs and projects that ensure structural integrity.
  • To prevent spoliation and avoid damage or unsafe conditions.

Examples of inspections Island County is conducting that adhere to the above conditions are as follows:

  • Island County Building Inspectors (ICBI) are offering virtual inspections where it is feasible at the discretion of the Island County Building Official, Andy Griffin.
  • Inspections of the inside of occupied homes or apartments may be performed virtually (using FaceTime or the like) if possible, or postponed until these types of inspections can be performed safely without the risk of unknown exposure to COVID-19.
  • ICBI will not enter occupied homes or apartments at this time due to COVID-19.
  • Exterior inspections such as retaining walls, bulkheads and roof or shear wall inspections for weather protection will be conducted.
  • ICBI will provide inspections to ensure the structures are safe from any spoliation or damage and maintain structural integrity for the duration of the mandated shutdown.

We are here to ensure all of Island County's construction sites can reach a safe place to stop construction properly and accordingly. If you have questions, comments or concerns please call or email:

Andy Griffin, Building Official

Our Department's top priority is to protect the health and safety of our employees and the public.
