The Board of Island County Commissioners is looking for citizens interested in filling positions on a variety of committees and boards. The volunteer positions are located throughout the county and involve a wide range of qualifications. Current vacancies in Island County committees are as follows:

  • Board of Equalization: Three-year terms (vacancy opening July 13, 2024)
    • Position 6: Members must be residents of Island County and if they were employed by the Assessor’s Office, they must have left their employment a minimum of 2 years prior.
    • New members must be available JUNE 4-5, 2024 (ONLINE) OR JUNE 11-12, 2024 (ELLENSBURG) for a two-day Board of Equalization training seminar that provides an overview of BOE duties and is designed for new clerks and board members. The course concentrates on basic board fundamentals, although experienced staff members are welcome to attend and share their experiences. Both PowerPoint presentations and group discussion will be utilized. The more complex issues will be addressed as time allows. This course satisfies the training requirements listed in RCW 84.48.042. 
  • Civil Service Commission:Six-year terms
    • Position 1: Must be a U.S. citizen, resident of Island County for a minimum of two years. No more than two members may have the same political affiliation.
  • Conservation Futures Program Citizens Advisory Board:Three-year terms
    • Position 4: Resident of District 2
    • Position 5: Resident of District 3
    • Position 8: At-Large
  • Island County LEOFF/Disability Board:Two-year terms
    • Position 2: Member must be a retired law enforcement or firefighter recipient of LEOFF 1 disability benefits.
  • Ferry Advisory Committee:Four-year terms
    • Position 2: Must be a frequent ferry rider.
  • Housing Advisory Board:Three-year Terms
    • Position 6: Member must be a part of the building industry who serve low-income households in Island County.
    • Position 15: Member should be an interested community member in issues faced by low-income households in Island County.
  • Housing Authority of Island County:Five-year terms
    • Position 3: Member must be a resident of Island County
  • Island County Regional Transportation Planning Organization Technical Advisory Committee:
    • Position 3: Resident of District 3
  • Law & Justice Council:Two-year terms
    • Position 3: Resident of District 2
    • Position 6: Resident of District 3
  • Lodging Tax Advisory Committee:Four-year terms
    • Position 2: Member must be part of a business subject to the 2% Lodging Tax from Central Whidbey.
    • Position 6: Position will be vacant Sept. 15, 2024 and must be part of an organization eligible to receive the LTAC grants.
  • Marine Resources Committee:Three-year terms
    • Position 10: Member must be a resident of Island County with experience with Marine Resources.
    • Position 16: Member must be a resident of Island County with experience with Marine Resources.
  • Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve Trust Board: Four-year terms
    • Position 4: Resident of Island County within the Ebey’s Reserve
  • North Sound Behavioral Health Administrative Services Organization Advisory Board:Three-year terms
    • Position 4: Member must be a resident of Island County with experience around the impacts of Behavioral Health issues and/or policies.
  • Northwest Senior Services Advisory Board: Three-year terms
    • Position 3: Member must be a resident of Island County with experience around issues facing seniors.
  • Northwest Workforce Council:Three-year terms
    • Position 4: Member must be a resident of Island County from a Community Development-based organization.
  • Island County Planning Commission: Four-year terms
    • Position 3, District 1: Member must be an Island County resident of District 1.
    • Position 1, District 2: Member must be an Island County resident of District 2.
  • Solid Waste Advisory Committee: 
    • Position 12: Member must be a representative of agricultural interests in Island County.
  • Veterans Advisory Commission:Two-year terms.
    • Position 4: Member must be from Disabled American Veterans Post 47
    • Position 6: Member must be from the Whidbey Veterans Resource Center
    • Position 9: Member must be a resident of Whidbey Island with experience or interest in Veterans Services.
