Public Records Requests

Island County government is organized into separate departments and offices of independently elected officials. Each department and office is a "local agency" responsible for its own records under the definition in RCW 42.17A.005 (2). There is no central office with access and responsibility to maintain and control all records.

Anyone can request public records by writing to the specific office's public records officer. The request should identify the particular record desired with enough specificity so it can be located. Individual county departments may have specific public record request forms available.

If you are requesting a copy of the body worn camera recordings, per RCW 42.56.240(14)(d), your request must include:

  • Specifically identify a name of a person or persons involved in the incident;
  • Provide the incident or case number;
  • Provide the date, time, and location of the incident or incidents; or
  • Identify a law enforcement or corrections officer involved in the incident or incidents.
  • A person directly involved in an incident recorded by the requested body worn camera recording, an attorney representing a person directly involved in an incident recorded by the requested body worn camera recording

Copies of records shall be made at the costs indicated in Island County Resolution No. C-46-22.
