Septic System Pumping: A Guide for Homeowners

Routine pumping is one of the most important steps you can take to maintain the health and lifespan of your septic system. A system that is not pumped regularly to remove solids will eventually fail. Think of it like changing the oil in your car—it’s a vital service that prevents costly damage down the road.

Why Pumping is Necessary

The main goal of pumping is to remove the buildup of solids, fats, oils, and grease from your septic tank. Over time, heavy solids sink to the bottom to form a layer of sludge, while lighter fats and grease float to the top, creating a layer of scum. Pumping removes this material before it can build up, clog your drainfield, and cause a system failure.

Recommended Pumping Schedule

While there is no single schedule that fits every system, a good rule of thumb is to have your septic tank pumped every 3 to 5 years. Use the below table to find more accurate guidance based on your system and household size.

The exact frequency depends on several factors, including:

  • The size of your septic tank.
  • The number of people in your household.
  • Whether you use a garbage disposal.

The technical rule is that a tank should be pumped when it is one-third full of solids. A licensed professional will measure the sludge and scum layers during a system inspection and let you know when pumping is due.

Pumping vs. Inspection: What's the Difference?

It's important to understand that pumping your tank is not the same as having a system inspection.

  • Pumping is the physical process of removing the contents of your septic tank.
  • A System Inspection is a detailed evaluation of all your system's components (the tank, pump, and drainfield) to ensure they are functioning correctly, as required by Island County Code 8.07D.
  • Access your septic records to determine when your system was last pumped or inspected.

An inspection determines if and when your system needs to be pumped. You cannot substitute one for the other.
